What dental bonding costs — and why no fee schedule has a line called bonding
Dental bonding is composite resin put onto a tooth, shaped by hand and hardened in place. It is used to repair a chip, close a gap, rebuild a worn edge or change the shape of a tooth. What it is not is a category anyone bills. Across all three published schedules read for this site on 24 September 2026, there is not one line called bonding. The word appears only inside the phrase "re-cement or re-bond", which is about putting a crown back.
That absence is the key to the price. Bonding is billed as a composite restoration, and composite restorations are priced by two things: whether the tooth is at the front or the back, and how many surfaces of it are covered. Surfaces, not minutes, not artistry.
Priced by surface count
A tooth has faces — the one you can see, the one facing your tongue, the two facing the neighbouring teeth, and the biting surface. A restoration is described by how many of those it touches. One chip on a front tooth's visible face is a one-surface restoration. A repair that wraps around the corner and onto the biting edge is more.
| Surfaces covered | Pennsylvania | Montana | Washington |
|---|---|---|---|
| One (D2330) | $50.00 | $79.04 | $125.00 |
| Two (D2331) | $60.00 | $118.56 | $140.00 |
| Three (D2332) | $65.00 | $138.32 | $170.00 |
| Four or more (D2335) | $65.00 | $158.08 | $212.00 |
Two patterns jump out. Washington's allowances climb steadily with the work, from $125.00 to $212.00. Pennsylvania's flatten out and then stop: $50.00, $60.00, $65.00, $65.00 — the schedule pays the same for a four-surface repair as for a three-surface one. A payer that stops distinguishing above three surfaces is telling you something about where its funding stops, not about where the work does.
The most ordinary restoration there is, on three published schedules. Same code, same tooth, three allowances.

Back teeth are priced separately from front ones, and the same shape appears: a two-surface composite on a back tooth is allowed $60.00 in Pennsylvania, $158.08 in Montana and $160.00 in Washington. At the top of the back-tooth range, a four-or-more-surface composite is $65.00, $225.26 and $227.00 respectively — a gap of nearly three and a half times between the cheapest and dearest published allowance for identical work.
Repair and cosmetics are the same material and different money
This is where a quote can surprise people. The composite used to repair a broken tooth and the composite used to reshape an unbroken one are the same substance applied the same way — but a payer funding restorative treatment does not necessarily fund appearance. The ADA says of composite fillings, plainly, that they "cost more than amalgam and occasionally are not covered by some insurance plans".
So the same work on the same tooth can be a funded restoration or an unfunded cosmetic procedure depending on why it is being done, and the person who decides which is the dentist writing the plan. If appearance is the reason, expect to pay in full and ask for the fee in writing before the appointment. Gaps and chips are the most common version of this and have their own page: bonding for gaps and chipped teeth.
How long bonding lasts
We found no source worth printing a number from, so there is no number here. What there is, is the ADA's own summary of composite as a material: it offers "good durability and resistance to fracture in small- to mid-size fillings that need to withstand moderate pressure", it takes longer to place than a metal filling, and some studies show composites "can be less durable and need to be replaced more often than amalgam fillings". The same page states the general rule in four words: "no dental filling lasts forever".
Read those together and the honest picture is: a material chosen largely for how it looks, strong enough for moderate loads, expected to be replaced at some point, with no reliable published figure for when. Anyone offering you a confident lifespan for bonding is not reading a better source than that — there is not one.
The schedules do hint at how payers think about replacement. Pennsylvania attaches "1 per 180 days" to its composite lines — the same tooth surface can be redone at most twice a year at the programme's expense. That is a funding limit and not a prediction, and treating it as an estimate of durability would be reading it exactly backwards. The same distinction runs through how long crowns and bridges last.
Bonding against a crown, in money
The gap between a bonded repair and a crown is the widest in restorative dentistry, and it is worth seeing in one line. On Washington's schedule the largest composite on a back tooth is $227.00 and an all-ceramic crown is $1,028.00 — four and a half times more. On Pennsylvania's the same comparison is $65.00 against $500.00. Whether a tooth can be repaired rather than covered is entirely a clinical judgement about how much sound tooth is left, and only an examination settles it, but the cost of the two answers is not remotely similar and it is a fair thing to ask about. The full crown picture is in types of dental crown and cost.
In England, bonding is inside a band
NHS treatment in England is charged in bands rather than per item, and fillings sit in Band 2 at £76.60, which covers everything in that band for the whole course of treatment. The NHS page, last reviewed on 13 March 2025, is careful about the tooth-coloured question: "White fillings are available on the NHS when clinically necessary", with a white filling likely at the front and "a more effective option may be a silver-coloured (amalgam) filling" at the back. If you would prefer white in a back tooth, the page says your dentist can advise on private costs. Purely cosmetic reshaping is a private matter there too.
